Coexisting with Coyotes (CWC) GIS/Mapping Volunteer
Status:

Here is your chance to volunteer with one of the most active and forward moving conservation outreach programs in the province. The Co-Existing with Coyotes (CWC) program is in its 10th year of service and aims to reduce conflict between people, pets, and coyotes by providing accessible information through a wide range of media.
Time Commitment:
- Hours: 4-8 hours a week
- Time of Day: Flexible - Morning and/or Afternoon; Mon or Fri
- Minimum commitment: 3 months
Duties:
The volunteer GIS mapping assistant will be working with urban wildlife sightings raw data and using Mapinfo software to create 'coyote activity' mapping outputs that are used in many different outreach applications.
Training package includes:
- Introduction package to the CWC program
- Orientation to SPES office
- Coaching through various processes pertaining to the different program services
- Other training as required
Acquired skills:
- Learn about: urban wildlife, how a not for profit public outreach program operates,
- Many of the skills you acquired through the CWC GIS role are highly sought after by employers and help bolster one's resume and skills base.

Special Events Program Volunteer

Want to help nature, create awareness but don't know the name of every bird or flower? The Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) has a role for you!
As part of our Public Outreach and Community Events initiatives. the Special Events volunteer team will welcome visitors, provide information about Stanley Park, and represent SPES. This crew will work under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator and/or Public Programs Manager in the set-up and staffing of our outreach activities, including for Earth Day and at various events at Science World.
You will be teamed up with one or two other volunteers and spend 3-4 hours interacting with members of the public at the SPES booth.
Duties: set-up and take down of booth, props (including natural history displays) and promotional materials, possible activities with children and families, selling memberships and providing the public with information about Stanley Park and our education and conservation efforts.
Shifts: The shift is from 11am-3pm every Saturday. The program itself begins in April and runs through to the end of August.

Volunteers may contribute to CWC in a variety of roles:
- CWC 'Information and Data' - phone and email
- Email: respond to public inquiries using email templates
- Phone: record information from the Coyote Hotline answering machine
- CWC Community Events
- Event assistants will attend community fairs and events
- Assist with the CWC display area, answer the public's questions regarding coyotes
- Demonstrate and explain the display exhibits
- Supervise children in the creation of a coyote related crafts.
- CWC Programming
- Prep and assist on Coyote related school and community presentation programs.
- CWC Projects & Research
- Projects and research opportunities range in form and scope.
- Projects are development based and aim to build on existing program components.
- Some projects and research may require specific skills and experience

Eco Ranger

Got some extra time this summer, looking for a great place to volunteer with a fun group of people, learn interesting new skills and help with an important cause? Consider volunteering for Eco Rangers, one of SPES's most successful and enduring programs.
Eco Rangers is open to volunteers aged 15 and up. In the summer months, you can see the uniformed Eco Rangers working in pairs as roving naturalists in the park, answering visitors' questions about local animals and plants, and providing other important on-the-spot interpretation. These volunteers are intensively trained on the Park's wildlife, plants and cultural history, as well as in interpretive skills. As a Stanley Park guides, Eco Ranger volunteers will be treating Stanley Park visitors with a more meaningful experience in the park. Volunteering for Eco Rangers is a great way to get valuable hands-on experience in our beautiful Stanley Park, learn more about nature and make new friends!
MANDATORY TRAINING SESSIONS on local natural and cultural history, as well as interpretation techniques will take place for a half day every Saturday or Sunday in June, as well a couple of weekday evening training sessions also in June . The bulk of the program will be delivered during July-August, Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 1 shifts of 3.5 hour per week, for the duration of July and August plus to the training.
Requirements:
- Must have a passion for learning
- Must love teaching, and meeting and interacting with people
- Excellent communication skills - strong English speaking and comprehension skills mandatory
- Outgoing, enthusiastic, and confident nature
- High commitment level and reliable team player

Ivy Team Leader

As the Ivy Busters program is expanding, we are looking for volunteer team leaders to help train and lead small groups during stewardship programs.
Details of position:
- Learn how to conduct site assessments, instruct and lead new volunteers on invasive species removal techniques, and monitor sites following invasive plant removal
- Commitment: 8 hours per month for events, and be available to attend 2 training sessions held on weekends

School Programs Promotion Assistant
Status:

School is back in, and our School Programs Department will soon be busy leading field trips for elementary students in Stanley Park's forests, wetlands and beaches. We are in need of one to two assistants who can help us with promoting our program brochure to over 600 schools in the Lower Mainland.
Duties may include:
- Contacting people at school districts to ask them for approval to distribute our brochure
- Printing mailing labels for schools
- Counting brochures and stuffing, labelling and stamping envelopes
- Tracking schools and mailing costs using our master chart
- Calling returning teachers to encourage them to book programs

The volunteer conservation assistant will be entering data from wildlife and habitat surveys into our databases - mainly inventories of plant and animal species including plant invasives, great blue heron and bald eagle nesting information, forest bird populations, and data from amphibian and habitat surveys, etc. The volunteer will also be involved in also photo labeling and compiling Species at Risk information.

Popcorn Stand Attendant

Purpose:
To support the Stanley Park Ecology Society in operating the Popcorn Stand through the popular Halloween Ghost Train event. Our popcorn stand is the famous Stanley Park's Cob House, built by a team of youth and community volunteers led by experienced cob builders. Cob is a building material made of clay, sand and straw which has been used around the world to create beautiful buildings that stand the test of time and use materials that are natural and ecologically sustainable.
Details of position:
- Aid the staff person to prepare and sell delicious organic popcorn to the public
- Be friendly and outgoing to the public
- General maintenance of the popcorn stand
Benefits:

Qualifications:

Timeframe:

URBAN CAMPING ASSISTANT

Want to make a difference? Volunteer in our popular and fun Urban Camping program, make new friends, and help connect school kids with nature in beautiful Stanley Park!
Volunteers will assist with the Urban Camping Program, which provides an opportunity for inner city grades 4-7 students and teachers to enjoy an overnight camping experience in Stanley Park. In this program, students will be engaged in environmental education and outdoor recreation activities including: forest and wetland studies, knot-tying, shelter-building, camp cooking and basic survival skills.
Duration of program: April 12 - June 29, 2011
1) Urban Camping Evening Assistant:
The volunteers will assist with the transition from the daytime to the night-time component of the program. They will help distribute gear and assist student learners.
Shifts: Tuesdays or Thursdays, 3:30-7:30 pm for the duration of the program. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one shift per week for the duration of the program.

2) Urban Camping Night Leader:
This position involves overnight camping in the park with students and teachers. Tent and sleeping bag are provided.
Shifts: 2 overnight shifts per week Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday/Friday. (2:30pm-9:30am)
Duties:
- Help campers set up their tents
- Co-ordinate meal preparation for breakfast and dinner
- Assist with guiding students through the forest to the wetland at night
- Attend the evening night hike
- Camp under the stars in Stanley Park
- Assist with taking down tents and storing equipment
- Maintain program materials and equipment
Requirements:
- Experience teaching or leading groups of elementary children
- Experience in camping with children, outdoor education or nature interpretation
- Background in science/environmental studies, and BC forest or wetland ecology
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Willingness to work outdoors rain or shine
- Standard First Aid certification
- Criminal record check required.

To assist with developing a public survey that will gauge the attitudes of Vancouver residents regarding coyotes living in the urban environment.
Responsible To:
Co-existing with Coyotes (CwC) Outreach Coordinator
Duties:
- Familiarisation with past CwC surveys
- Perform a "needs assessment intake" with the CwC Coordinator and other CwC partners
- Draft a sample survey
- Implement feedback
- Finalise survey
- Collect and evaluate data
Requirements:

- Coyote knowledge or interest in learning about coyotes

Youth Summer Ecology Program
Status:

Purpose:
The Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) is offering an exciting opportunity for youth aged 14 to 20 to earn volunteer hours and work in teams to undertake conservation initiatives in Stanley Park. Volunteers will participate in habitat restoration and enhancement activities, learn about west coast ecology and conservation issues, and develop organizational and leadership skills.
Duties:
- Work in teams to remove targeted invasive species from selected areas of Stanley Park
- Contribute to discussions and activities relating to ecology and conservation
- Educate the public about ecology and invasive species in Stanley Park
- Support fellow team members and the Stewardship Coordinator
Time Commitment:
- Volunteer opportunities available August 9 - 13, 16 - 20, 23 - 27
- Ten volunteers will participate each week
- Participants are expected to volunteer up to 5.5 hours/day totalling ~25 hours

SPES is in need of an individual with building experience who can help with projects such as a counter for the Stanley Park Nature House on Lost Lagoon. Other projects might include shelving, display cases and supporting structures for new exhibits, nesting boxes, etc.

Nest Box Program Monitors

Position Description:
SPES is offering an exciting opportunity for individuals to assist the Stewardship Programs Coordinator and Team Leader with nest box monitoring for mason bees, swallows, and wood ducks during the spring and summer of 2011. SPES is seeking up to 20 volunteers to monitor nest boxes in Stanley Park from April to mid July.
Volunteer Time Commitment:
This volunteer position is primarily self directed with guidance provided by the program Team Leader. Nest box monitors will be required to a commit to monitor nest boxes a minimum of 1 day per week or every other week from April to mid July. Volunteering can take place at any time during daylight hours when birds are active and visible. A total of 14 nest boxes require monitoring: 11 on Lost Lagoon, 2 on Beaver Lake, and 1 at the Rose Garden. Volunteers are asked to monitor all nest boxes during each visit to Stanley Park. The duration of volunteering required for each day of monitoring all nest boxes is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. This means volunteers must be willing to commit a minimum of approximately 2 to 4 hours per week or bi-weekly. Monitoring nest boxes by bike is an option, which would lessen the duration.
Volunteer Duties:
- Learn bird and bee identification and observation skills;
- Collect field data focusing on recording activity of species at nest box sites;
- Enter field data in Excel and submit to program Team Leader on a weekly or bi-weekly basis;
- Photograph observations (note: volunteers have to supply their own camera and be willing to grant SPES permission to use photos);
- Communicate with the program Team Leader on a weekly or bi-weekly basis; and
- Possible assistance with data summary, analysis, and reporting.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Mature, reliable, good communicator, and enthusiastic;
- Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented;
- Preference for individuals with a background or interest in ecology, nature, stewardship, or conservation;
- Enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions;
- Willingness to learn and have fun;
- Good English; and
- Able to commit to volunteering 2 to 4 hours per week or bi-weekly and a minimum of 3 to 4 months.
A limited number of binoculars are available for volunteer use. It is preferred that volunteers have their own binoculars for this position.
Training
All necessary direction and training materials will be provided via email and on-site by the Stewardship Programs Coordinator and program Team Leader.

URBAN CAMPING ASSISTANT

Want to make a difference? Volunteer in our popular and fun Urban Camping program, make new friends, and help connect school kids with nature in beautiful Stanley Park!
Volunteers will assist with the Urban Camping Program, which provides an opportunity for inner city grades 4-7 students and teachers to enjoy an overnight camping experience in Stanley Park. In this program, students will be engaged in environmental education and outdoor recreation activities including: forest and wetland studies, knot-tying, shelter-building, camp cooking and basic survival skills.
Duration of program: April 12 - June 29, 2011
1) Urban Camping Evening Assistant:
The volunteers will assist with the transition from the daytime to the night-time component of the program. They will help distribute gear and assist student learners.
Shifts: Tuesdays or Thursdays, 3:30-7:30 pm for the duration of the program. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one shift per week for the duration of the program.

Training: Full training will be provided before the first shift.

- Excellent communication skills are essential
2) Urban Camping Night Leader:
This position involves overnight camping in the park with students and teachers. Tent and sleeping bag are provided.
Shifts: 2 overnight shifts per week Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday/Friday. (2:30pm-9:30am)
Duties:
- Help campers set up their tents
- Co-ordinate meal preparation for breakfast and dinner
- Assist with guiding students through the forest to the wetland at night
- Attend the evening night hike
- Camp under the stars in Stanley Park
- Assist with taking down tents and storing equipment
- Maintain program materials and equipment
Requirements:
- Experience teaching or leading groups of elementary children
- Experience in camping with children, outdoor education or nature interpretation
- Background in science/environmental studies, and BC forest or wetland ecology
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Willingness to work outdoors rain or shine
- Standard First Aid certification
- Criminal record check required.
