Conservation Programs - Wildlife Monitoring

Breeding bird notetaking

Breeding bird surveys are conducted in May and June.

The Stanley Park Ecology Society monitors wildlife in Stanley Park and beyond.  Our eagle and heron monitoring programs began in 2004 and we have conducted monthly bird counts around Beaver Lake and Lost Lagoon for many years earlier than that.  Following the windstorms of December 2006, SPES began more wildlife monitoring programs as a part of the restoration process.  Initial surveys in 2007 for owls, breeding birds, amphibians, and Species at Risk carried out alongside professional biologists provided baseline information for long-term monitoring programs.

These programs rely on time donated by dedicated volunteers and advice from professional biologists.  Surveys follow modified provincial standards in most cases and the data we collect is distributed to interested parties including the Vancouver Park Board, the Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Canada, and others.
