Northwestern Crow (Corvus caurinus)
Adults: 38 - 43 cm (with tail), 270 - 350 grams
Did You Know?
- Young crows have bright blue eyes
- Crows have been known to make more than 60 different sounds
- Thousands fly east towards Still Creek (Willingdon North Exit from Highway 1) in Burnaby every day around dusk
- Crows in urban parks have been seen drinking from water fountains
Characteristics:
- Black feathers, legs and beak
- Adults have dark eyes, young have bright blue eyes
- "Moustache"-like feathers cover their nares (bird's nostrils)
- Very vocal, capable imitators ; very social bird, flock in thousands
Habitat:
- Costal Alaska, B.C. and Washington, neighbour's range of American Crow
Diet:
- Everything! Shellfish, insects, fruit, nuts, seeds, eggs, rodents
- Northwestern crows originally fed off the shoreline
- Urban crows often feed off human garbage, road kill
Breeding:
- Large nest at top of trees
