This coyote pup was filmed coming out of its den in South Vancouver, April 2009. The den was found in an overgrown empty lot. Urban coyotes enjoy building dens in such areas as there peace and quiet, open space and a place for the pups to play and learn in relative comfort and safety.
This collection of video segments was taken by the Co-existing with Coyote program team in Vancouver's Stanley Park, BC, Canada. The aim of these videos is to help inform people that shouting at a coyote in a low deep voice "GO AWAY!", making yourself look big, and throwing the coyote shaker in the direction of the coyote, effectively works to deter habituated coyotes.
Coyotes are timid creatures by nature and by shouting "GO AWAY COYOTE!" you are sounding an alert to others in the area informing them that there is a coyote nearby. Those that hear you can then take appropriate action such as picking up their small dog or bring their cats inside and hopefully, they too will harass the coyote, thereby keeping coyotes afraid of people.
Coyote's will change their behaviour based on what they encounter. Never harass a coyote that is trapped or cornered.
