Coyotes 101
Coyotes 101 is a coyote-preparedness auditorium presentation for schools. Topics of discussion include coyote identification, behaviour, survival requirements, and attractants found in cities and backyards. Most importantly, students are taught appropriate and inappropriate behaviour around coyotes. Activities include a slide show, a coyote pelt and skull demonstration, an encounter skit, and a coyote invitation skit.

Look at a real coyote pelt to reinforce the identifying features. Examine a wolf, coyote and fox skull in order to articulate a common mental image of coyote size. |

Practice appropriate encounter behaviour with audience volunteers. |
Coyote Invitation Skit |
Demonstrate what attracts coyotes to backyards and parks with audience volunteers. |
Students learn to:
- Describe the appearance and behaviour of coyotes
- Identify differences between coyotes and similar species
- Describe the basic needs of coyotes and how these are met in the city
- Describe the role and function of coyotes in the ecosystem
- Analyze how coyotes have adapted to urban environments
- Describe and practice proper behaviour in a coyote encounter
- Identify human choices and actions that harm coyotes
