On Sunday, November 15, 2009 SPES staff, volunteers and members of the public conducted our second annual winter seawall survey (Here are the 2008 survey results). The survey aimed to count every bird using the seashore. The shoreline of Stanley Park was broken into four zones for comparison and birds were recorded as either sitting on shore, using the intertidal zone (between the high tide and low tide lines), or using offshore areas. The total number of birds in 2009 was much larger than 2008 mostly due to the over 3798 surf scoters observed in zone A, but the diversity of bird species was very similar for both years (zone locations).
