Who Am I?

Explore Nature

Did you know that British Columbia has the greatest number of different kinds, or species, of plants and animals than any other province in Canada?

At lot of these animals can only live far away from people, but some of these incredible creatures live right in our own neighbourhoods.

Do you know who they are?

Find out who might be living in your nearby parks, or even in your backyard, by using the clues below:

CLUE: I come out at night to hunt insects to eat. I have a very special way of finding my prey (food)... by using sound. I'm so good at it that I may catch and eat up to 600 mosquitoes in one hour!

CLUE: I am colourful and beautiful and I look like a harmless sea creature. You might be surprised to find out that I am an awesome predator with a huge appetite. My stomach actually comes out of my mouth to digest the animals I eat!

CLUE: I am very shy and secretive and live in moist dark areas on or under the ground. I eat insects and worms. If a predator takes my tail, I can grow a new one!

CLUE: I like to build my nest in tree cavities or holes. I eat lots of different foods, including mushrooms, bird eggs, and seeds from tree cones. My front teeth actually never stop growing! I have to chew on hard food almost all the time to keep them from getting too long.

CLUE: I have handsome blue feathers and a crest on my head. I am the provincial bird of British Columbia, and you can hear me coming with a loud shack-shack-shack call.
