Environmental Educator with the Stanley Park Ecology Society

Description

The Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) promotes awareness of and respect for the natural world and plays a leadership role in the stewardship of Stanley Park through collaborative initiatives in education, research and conservation. We are seeking an innovative, creative and passionate educator to assist in the delivery of nature education programs for schools, community groups and the public.

SPES programs cover a diverse range of local ecosystems and are offered to groups throughout the year. You will be working out of the Dining Pavilion in Stanley Park and reporting to the School Programs Manager and the Public Programs Manager. This is a great opportunity to promote the wonders of the natural world to local people of all ages.

Duties

  • Lead nature education programs for elementary school students, community groups and the public.
  • Design, develop and deliver nature education programs.
  • Register and promote programs and carry out associated administration.
  • Update, maintain and design program materials and equipment.
  • Other duties as needed, including office administrative tasks.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience teaching or leading groups of all ages; an education degree is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of BC ecology; a degree or diploma in biology/environmental studies is an asset.
  • Excellent leadership, organization, teamwork and communication skills.
  • Willingness to perform active work outdoors, rain or shine.
  • Experience in outdoor education or nature interpretation.
  • Proficiency with word-processing, database entry and email.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign and Illustrator) an asset.
  • BC driver's license, first aid certification, and criminal record check are required. Please indicate these qualifications clearly in your cover letter.

This position may be wage subsidy dependent.

Please indicate clearly how you meet any of the following criteria:
  • Be 30 years of age or younger and a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant 
  • Be a graduate of a post-secondary institution (i.e. college, university, or technical school)
  • Be eligible for full-time employment (i.e. not returning to school)
  • Be unemployed or underemployed (i.e. working part-time, on a short contract of less than 6 months, or working outside of your field of study)
  • Have not previously participated in a federal youth employment/education program (previous participants of summer employment programs are still eligible)
  • Have the intention to obtain a permanent position in the environment industry
  • Not be a family member of the organization's directors or senior officers
  • have been approved for EI benefits in the past 3 years
  • have collected EI on parental leave in the last 5 years

Pay: $14.38 hourly, plus 4% in lieu of benefits
Hours: 30 hours per week, with possibility of an additional 7.5 hours per week depending on program bookings.
